This paper begins with a brief description of the fertility situation and the family planning programme in the country, and some simple background data about the survey - the sample scheme, the characteristics of the sample population and its findings on contraceptive practice. The main purpose of the paper is to undertake some analysis of the data on contraceptive histories collected in the survey. A method similar to that used in the study of internal migration is adapted for measuring: (a) the volume of gross and net change in the use of each contraceptive method; (b) rates of contraception change; and (c) some simple data on cohorts and streams of contraception changers. Some interesting observations on shifts in the use of contraceptive methods and dropouts from contraceptive practice emerge from this analysis (Summary)
